Abandoned Castle in Barcelona, Spain
I couldnt believe there was an abandoned castle just outside of Barcelona, and that I never heard about it after three years of living here. Its always a nice surprise to go and explore something in your own backyard- so I grabbed a backpack, lunch, skateboard decided to ride my bike there and check it out.
Castillo Torre Salvana was built in 992 in the classic romantic architecture style with some gothic and neo-gothic elements. It was the personal house and fortress of the Cervello family who reigned in the region, however during the Catalan Civil War of 1224 the castle was mostly destroyed. Legend says it took 13 days to be besieged and the defenders were brutally executed.
Since then the castle just sits in disuse, echoing a history that some say can still be heard. Urban legends arose over the years, and many say that this castle is the most haunted site in Catalunya. The tower is also known as ‘Torre del Diablo’ or ’Torre del Infierno’ and many claim to have seen, heard, and felt intense paranormal activities within the walls.
Most of the structure is surprisingly still intact. There are many paths you can choose once inside that will take you through different doorways, windows, rooms, stairs, and a courtyard. There is an option to climb up to the second floor (but be careful) and you can even see the old well and 1000 year old iron door hinges. The Torre Salvana crest on the facade still remains to this day.
Nearby the castle, in the town of Colonia Guell there is a church and crypt that was designed by the infamous Antoni Gaudi. It was an early project, one of the first where he developed his iconic styles that would later be used in his most famous work- La Sagrada Familia.
The town itself was built in 1800’s, a colonial town with american influence for the workers (and their families) of a nearby textile mill. The town is sizeable, and an excellent example of Modernist architecture.
All in all, its a perfect day trip for anyone looking to do something outside and visit something new. I was astounded by the architecture in the town, and humbled by the age and state of the abandoned castle.
